오는 8월 졸업예정인 MSDE학과의 악셀(Lefebure Axel Gael) 학생이  영국 캠브리지대학교로부터 석사과정 입학허가를 받았다.

한국을 사랑해서 멀리 유럽에서 한국으로 유학을 오게된 악셀 학생은, 재학 중 우수한 성적과 학부생임에도 활발한 연구활동[SCI급 논문 1편(주저자), KCI 논문 3편(주저자 1편+ 공저자 2편) 출판]으로 모범적인 학창생활을 보냈다.

우리 대학으로서도 성공적인 학부과정 유학생 사례이기에, 악셀 학생을 만나 이야기를 나눠보았다.

Q. 우선 자기소개를 부탁드립니다. 

My name is Axel, I am a 24-year old engineering student from Belgium. I first arrived in Korea back in September 2017 and plan to leave in August 2021. 

제 이름은 악셀이고, 벨기에에서 온 24살 공대생입니다. 2017년 9월에 한국에 처음 왔고 2021년 8월에 떠날 예정입니다.

Q. 지금 어느 학과, 몇 학년으로 재학 중인지? 

I am studying at the MSDE Department and am currently a fourth-year student in my last semester. I will graduate in August this year. 

저는 MSDE 학부에서 공부하고 있으며, 현재 마지막 학기에 4학년 학생입니다. 저는 올해 8월에 졸업합니다.

Q. 한국에서 대학을 다니게 된 계기는? 

After I graduated high school in Belgium, I was interested in a lot of subjects related to engineering. Unfortunately, I could not find a major that answered to all my interests, because I had to immediately choose if I wanted to be a biology, chemistry, or architectural engineer.  At the time, I was also greatly inspired by Korean culture thanks to the language and amazing technology I could see in movies, music, and video games. These two reasons made me decide to look for a study in Korea. 

벨기에에서 고등학교를 졸업한 후, 저는 공학과 관련된 많은 과목에 관심을 가졌습니다. 그러나 저는 저의 모든 관심사에 맞는 전공을 찾을 수 없었습니다. 왜냐하면 저는 생물학자 · 화학자 · 건축공학자 중에 무엇이 되고 싶은지 바로 선택해야 했기 때문입니다. 당시 저는 영화, 음악, 비디오 게임에서 볼 수 있는 언어와 기술 덕분에 한국 문화에 큰 영감을 받았습니다. 이 두 가지 이유 때문에 저는 한국에서 공부할 것을 결심하게 되었습니다.

Q. 왜 서울과기대를 선택했는지?

When I left my home country, I could not speak any Korean. I wanted to start my engineering studies right away, so I searched for a major that carried out its lectures in English, instead of Korean. I found the MSDE major at Seoultech and it was a perfect fit to my skills and broad interests. Additionally, studying in Belgium is very cheap compared to other countries. When I moved to Korea, I wanted to make sure that the tuition fee would be not that high and that there are many opportunities for scholarships. Thanks to my English test score, I received a great Seoultech scholarship, and I was able to live my first semester in Korea, completely for free. 

벨기에를 떠날 때, 저는 한국어를 전혀 할 수 없었습니다. 바로 공학 공부를 시작하고 싶어서 한국어 대신 영어로 강의를 진행하는 전공을 찾았습니다. 저는 서울 과기대에서 MSDE 전공을 찾았고 제 기술과 폭넓은 관심사에 딱 들어맞았습니다.
게다가, 벨기에의 학비는 다른 나라에 비해 매우 저렴합니다. 한국에서도 등록금이 비싸지 않고 장학금을 받을 수 있는 곳이 있는지 확인했습니다. 영어 시험 점수 덕분에, 저는 서울 과기대에서 장학금을 받을 수 있었고, 한국에서 첫 학기를 무료로 다닐 수 있었습니다.

Q. 수업이 끝난 후에는 보통 어떤 일을 하나요? 

After class, I usually like to go out with friends to have some food, play some games or go shopping. Unfortunately, that is not really possible these days due to the pandemic, so now I usually just play games or watch videos from my home. After my second year at Seoultech, I also joined one of my major’s research labs so that I could learn more after class and spend my time more meaningfully.

수업이 끝나면, 저는 주로 친구들과 함께 밥을 먹거나, 게임을 하거나, 쇼핑을 하는 것을 좋아합니다. 불행히도, 요즘 코로나 때문에 그렇게는 하지 못해서, 지금은 주로 집에서 게임을 하거나 영화를 봅니다. 과기대에서 2학년을 마친 후, 저는 수업이 끝난 후 더 많은 것을 배우고 더 의미 있는 시간을 보낼 수 있도록 제 전공의 연구실 중 한 곳에 들어갔습니다.

Q. 외국인으로서 한국 학교를 다닐 때 장단점은? 

Korean schools are generally trying very hard to please all the foreigners and make them feel comfortable. They understand the difficult situation foreigners are in and they try their best to help out. Korean students are also very hardworking and dedicated, so it is great to have some competition and motivation from that.  Also, if you are a hardworking student, or you speak Korean very well, you can impress your friends and professors and get a lot of unique and special chances. For example, I helped my professor to write some journal articles in renowned Korean research journals. I am sure these achievements will help me a lot in the future. 

한국의 학생들은 일반적으로 외국인 학생을 즐겁게 하고 그들을 편안하게 해주기 위해 노력합니다. 외국인 학생이 처한 어려운 상황을 이해하고 최선을 다해 돕습니다. 또한, 성실하고 열심히 공부하기 때문에 한국 학생들과 경쟁하고 동기 부여를 받는 것이 좋았습니다.  
만약 열심히 공부하거나 한국어를 잘한다면, 여러분은 친구들과 교수님에게 좋은 인상을 줄 수 있고, 독특하고 특별한 기회를 많이 얻을 수 있습니다. 예를 들어, 저는 교수님이 유명 한국 연구 학술지에 기고하는 것을 도왔습니다. 이러한 성과들이 미래에 저에게 큰 도움이 될 것이라고 확신합니다.

Q. 외국인으로서 한국 생활의 장단점은? 

There are not many foreigners in Korea, so it is easy to feel lonely as Korean students are often a little too shy to talk to and hard to make friends with. The Korean government systems are also not that easy to understand or access, so I think you often need a Korean friend to help you with such things. Nevertheless, after you made some friends, Korea is a great and fun place to hang out with so many activities to do. Korean people in general are also very kind to foreigners, so it is great to feel welcome. The public and online services such as subways, internet, ordering food are also very rapid and amazing to use.

한국에는 외국인이 많지 않고, 한국 학생은 조금 수줍고 친해지기 힘든  경우가 있기 때문에 외로움을 느끼기 쉽습니다. 한국 정부 시스템 또한 외국인이 쉽게 이해하고 접근할 수 있지 않기 때문에, 그런 것들을 도와줄 한국인 친구가 필요합니다. 그럼에도 불구하고, 친구들을 사귀고 나면 한국은 다양한 활동을 하고 재밌게 놀기 좋은 곳입니다. 일반적으로 한국 사람은 외국인에게 친절하기 때문에 환영받는 기분을 느낄 수 있습니다. 지하철, 인터넷, 음식 주문과 같은 대중교통과 온라인 서비스 또한 매우 빠르고 사용하기 좋습니다.

Q. 한국 친구를 사귀는데 어려움은 없었나요? 

As I mentioned before, Korean friends are kind of shy due to language and culture barriers, which also makes it easy to get into conflict. When I first came to Korea, other people were afraid to talk to me and they would not really ask me to go out for lunch. I had to be more confident person and always approach those friends first. After I talked to them, they became more open and were very funny and kind. 

앞서 말씀드린 것처럼 한국 친구들은 언어와 문화 장벽 때문에 수줍어하는 편이어서 어려움에 처하기도 합니다. 제가 한국에 처음 왔을 때, 사람들은 저와 대화하는 것을 두려워했고 같이 점심 먹으러 가자고 묻지 않았습니다. 저는 자신감을 갖고 친구들에게 먼저 다가가야 했습니다. 친구들과 이야기한 후에, 친구들은 저를 잘 받아주었고, 매우 재미있고 친절했습니다.

Q. 한국에 오게 된 후 생긴 개인적인 변화는? 

Thanks to the strong working spirit of Korean people, I think I became more ambitious myself too. I had to work hard, be confident and understanding so that I could make many good relationships with the people around me. In the West, we have a lot of ideas about Asia, but very little people have spent a long time in countries such as Korea to learn the culture. I believe I am better well-rounded person now and I can understand the differences between the West and Asia more.  

한국 사람의 근면 성실함 덕분에 저도 야심이 생겼다고 생각합니다. 저는 주변 사람들과 좋은 관계를 맺기 위해 열심히 일하고, 자신감과 이해심을 가져야 했습니다. 서양에서는 아시아에 많은 관심을 가지고 있지만, 한국과 같은 아시아 국가에서 문화를 배우기 위해 오랜 시간을 보낸 사람은 많지 않습니다. 저는 제가 한국에서 생활한 덕분에 다재다능한 사람이 되어 서양과 아시아의 차이를 더 잘 이해할 수 있을 것 같습니다.

Q. 외국인이 생각하는 한국 문화의 특징?

The Korean culture still has a lot of Confucianist beliefs in it, which was something very new to me and hard to deal with. I also noticed that the Korean people really feel like one people together. The pandemic shows this even more, but in general it looks like the people really care about each other in society, whereas in Europe, it would be way more selfish. 

한국 문화는 아직도 유교적 사상을 가지고 있는데 유교적 사상은 저에게 매우 새롭고 다루기 힘들었습니다. 또한 한국 사람은 동질감을 많이 느낀다는 것을 알게 되었습니다. 이번 코로나 사태는 이것을 훨씬 더 많이 보여주지만, 일반적으로는 사람들이 사회에서 서로를 정말 아껴주는 것처럼 보입니다. 반면 유럽에서는 훨씬 개인주의적입니다.

Q. 코로나19의 장기화로 당장 어려움을 겪고 있는게 있다면 어떤 것들이 있는지? 

I guess I am experiencing the same difficulties as most people in the world. I cannot go out easily with my friends, classes are moved to online, so I spent most of my time at home. It’s hard to stay motivated in such a situation. On top of that, I also now order a lot of food to my house, which ends up costing me lots of money. 

저는 세계 대부분의 사람들과 똑같은 어려움을 겪고 있는 것 같습니다. 친구들과 쉽게 외출할 수 없고, 온라인 수업을 들어서 대부분의 시간을 집에서 보냈습니다. 그런 상황에서 의욕을 유지하는 것은 어렵습니다. 게다가, 지금 집에서 배달 음식을 자주 주문해 먹는데 여기에는 돈이 많이 듭니다.

Q. 비대면 강의를 두 학기 동안 진행했는데 불편한 점은 없었는지? 

In general, having a pre-recorded lecture online was great because I get to decide when I watch it and it gave me more freedom in my schedule. Many professors also did big efforts to get in touch with the students through ZOOM, asking if there were any questions and such. However, some professors ended up using old videos they recorded in the past and never conducted a zoom class. This made it hard to stay motivated and interested in their class. If the teacher does not care, why should the students…?  

일반적으로, 온라인으로 사전 녹화된 강의를 듣는 것은 좋았습니다. 왜냐하면 강의를 볼 시간을 스스로 정할 수 있고 일정에 더 많은 자유가 주어졌기 때문입니다. 많은 교수들은 ZOOM을 통해 학생들과 소통하기 위해 많은 노력을 기울였습니다. 하지만 어떤 교수들은 과거에 녹화한 오래된 강의 동영상을 사용하고 ZOOM 수업을 시행하지 않았습니다. 때문에 수업에 의욕과 흥미를 유지하는 것을 어려웠습니다. 교수님도 수업에 신경을 쓰지 않는데, 학생들이 수업을 열심히 들을까요...?

Q. 코로나19에 따른 유학생들에 대한 대학 지원은 어떤 것들이 필요하다고 생각하나요? 

I think there are three required things: financial support, good interaction with professors and teachers, and some kind of system to get students in touch with each other. A lot of parents are having difficulties supporting their children for living costs and tuition fee, so it would be great if school could jump in. As I mentioned before, some professors do not interact with students at all, making the whole class experience feel demotivating and like a waste of time. It was not valid for me, but I believe a lot of foreign students experienced extreme difficulties due to not being able to make new friends. I believe the school should somehow help them to contact with each other.

저는 세 가지 필요한 것이 있습니다고 생각합니다. 재정적 지원, 교수님과 좋은 상호작용, 그리고 학생들이 서로 연락할 수 있는 시스템. 많은 학부모가 생활비, 학비 등의 부담으로 어려움을 겪고 있는데 학교가 나서서 도움을 주면 좋을 것 같습니다. 앞서 말씀드린 것처럼 일부 교수들은 학생들과 전혀 교류하지 않아, 수업 경험이 학생의 의욕을 꺾고 시간 낭비처럼 느껴지게 합니다. 또한 저에게는 해당되지 않지만, 많은 외국인 학생이 새로운 친구를 사귈 수 없어 극심한 어려움을 겪었다고 합니다. 저는 학교가 외국인 학생끼리 서로 연락할 수 있도록 도와야 한다고 생각합니다.

Q. 과기대에서 공부할 외국인 학생들에게 조언이 있다면? 

When I first came to Korea, I always told myself, I am here to experience Korean culture and make Korean friends. For that reason, I tried a little bit to stay away from other foreign friends and foreign clubs. Although I believe they can be extremely helpful, I think that Korean people are very scared to talk to a group of foreigners. If you are alone, I think it is somewhat easier for them. If you come to Korea and want to experience most of the culture, I strongly advice you not to always form groups with other foreigners. Try to go out, explore and meet friends by yourself. :)

저는 한국에 처음 왔을 때 한국 문화를 체험하고, 한국 친구를 사귀기 위해 한국에 왔다고 제 자신에게 되뇌이곤 했습니다. 그런 이유로, 저는 다른 외국 친구와 모임을 멀리하려고 노력했습니다. 외국인 친구는 도움이 될 수 있지만, 한국 사람은 외국인이 모여있는 무리와 대화하는 것을 두려워합니다. 당신이 혼자라면 한국인이 당신에게 말 걸기가 다소 수월할 것입니다. 만약 당신이 한국에 와서 많은 문화를 경험하고 싶다면, 외국인 친구나 모임을 만들지 않을 것을 충고합니다. 혼자 나가서 탐험하고 한국인 친구들을 사귀도록 하세요. :)

Q. 외국 학생으로서 한국 학생들에게 하고 싶은 말이 있다면?  

When I was younger, I would always think people in all countries are different. However, after having spent some time in Korea, I believe that people are somewhat the same all over the world. There are lots of different personalities, but all people want the same things. So, please do not think that foreigners are very different from you or are scary people. Foreigners want just the same as Korean people, hang out with friends and have a good time. So if you can, please don’t be scared or worried, about language or anything, and try to have a chat with a foreigner. Usually, they feel quite lonely in Korea and you talking to them will cheer them up so much. You can positively impact someone’s life :) 

어렸을 때, 전세계 사람들은 다 다를 거라 생각했습니다. 하지만 한국에서 살고 난 후에는 국적이 다르더라도 사람은 다 비슷하다고 느꼈습니다. 물론 다양한 성격의 사람이 있지만, 모든 사람은 같은 것을 원합니다. 부디 외국인이 여러분과 다른 무서운 사람이라고 생각하지 마세요. 외국인 학생도 친구들과 어울리며 즐거운 시간을 보내기를 바랍니다. 그러니 할 수 있다면, 언어든 뭐든 걱정하지 말고 외국인 친구와 대화를 시작해보세요. 대개 외로움을 느끼는 외국인 학생에게 당신이 말을 건다면 그를 격려해 줄 수 있습니다. 당신도 누군가의 삶에 선한 영향력을 미칠 수 있습니다 :)

Q. 앞으로의 계획이나 목표는? 

After I graduate here in Korea, I will move to Cambridge University in the UK to study a master’s degree and PhD. After that, I hope to come back to Korea and hopefully work in my undergraduate department as a foreigner professor. I hope I can expose Korean people a little more to the outside world and form some kind of bridge between the two worlds. 

저는 한국에서 졸업한 후 영국 케임브리지 대학교로 가서 석사 및 박사 과정을 공부할 것입니다. 그 후, 저는 한국으로 돌아와서 외국인 교수로서 학부에서 일하기를 희망합니다. 저는 많은 한국 사람이 세계에 모습을 드러내기를 바랍니다. 제가 두 세계에 다리 역할을 하기를 바랍니다.

Q. 마지막으로 서울과기대와 다른 학생들에게 하고 싶은 말씀이 있다면? 

I had a great and amazing time here in Korea and I would not trade it for anything. I have learned so many things here, not only in the field of engineering but also as a person. I have had great opportunities and made amazing friends. I hope that many more foreigners will not be afraid to start some adventure in Korea and I wish that they will all have a wonderful time.

저는 한국에 와서 정말 즐겁고 놀라운 시간을 보냈고, 이 시간은 그 어떤 것과도 바꾸지 않을 것입니다. 저는 이곳에서 공학뿐만 아니라 사람으로서도 많은 것을 배웠습니다. 저는 이곳에서 훌륭한 기회를 가졌고, 멋진 친구들을 사귀었습니다. 저는 더 많은 외국인이 한국에서 모험을 시작하는 것을 두려워하지 않기를 바랍니다. 한국에서 모두 멋진 시간을 보냈으면 좋겠습니다.
